Keep It Fresh – Storing Fruit, Vegetables and Herbs Correctly
Leave on the counter: tomatoes, peaches, plums, avocados, melons, mangoes, kiwifruits, bananas.
Store in fridge: berries, corn, summer squash, eggplants, bell peppers, cucumbers, lettuce, basil, parsley, cilantro, mint.
Store in pantry or bins: onions, potatoes, garlic.
Ho- Hum Meals?
Start by taking those familiar dishes and tweaking them with a few new ingredients. Use a combination of chopped cilantro, lime juice and a sprinkle of cumin on baked chicken, pork chops or grilled vegetables.
Buy small amounts of interesting herbs and spices from the bulk aisle (instead of in the more expensive bottles). Use smoked paprika or Chinese five-spice powder on baked fish or roasted chicken.
Try storing fresh fruits in muffin tins on the kitchen counter. By storing fruit this way it should prevent the fruit from bruising and developing soft spots and decay. Use it to hold peaches, plums and nectarines.
A blessed Summer Solstice to my friends and family at MMH.
