Turmeric ~ Herb of the Year for 2026

.
The International Herb Association has named turmeric [ Curcuma longa ] Herb of the Year for 2026. We expect this plant to gain in popularity for the summer growing season.
Turmeric is a tropical plant, grown in warmer climates. Turmeric’s origins can be traced to India, where it is a major ingredient in curry recipes. The turmeric you find in grocery stores is the plant rhizomes, ground and dried into powder. This form of turmeric can be found in the spice aisle.
Turmeric is a large plant. In ideal conditions, it grows to a height of 4 feet. Therefore, it needs space in the garden. Plant it 4 feet apart, and in full sunlight for best results.
Turmeric prefers rich, acidic soil. Applying mulches of finished compost, peat moss, or pine needles will help the plants flourish during hot weather. Water weekly to keep the plants healthy during extreme summer heat.
In the fall, leaves will wilt and dry out. This is when the rhizomes can be dug and harvested. Store the rhizomes in a cool, dry area out of direct sunlight. Once dry, the rhizomes can be boiled, dried, peeled, then ground into powder to produce the spice used for cooking.
You can also freeze the rhizomes. Wash, peel, and freeze them in freezer bags or plastic containers.
Turmeric does stain clothing and other fabrics, so be careful when using this bright and colorful herb.
