Essential Oils to Repel Mosquitos at your Outdoor Party
Essential oils can be bought at CVS, Rite-Aid, Walmart and most health food stores.
.
The best oils to spray on the lawn and surrounding areas are these:
- Lemon Eucalytus Oil – must be at least 70% cineole content
- Lavender Oil
- Tea Tree Oil [ possibly the best out there ]
- Thyme Oil
- Citronella Oil
- Rosemary Oil
One or two of the oils mixed together will do. Add about 10-15 drops of each essential oil to an open end sprayer — such as a Miracle Gro sprayer — or any pump type sprayer that will cover a large area. Add enough distilled white vinegar (5%) to fill the sprayer, and about 10 drops of dish detergent. The dish soap will help disperse the ingredients. Attach the sprayer to the hose, turn on the water and spray the grounds.
Do this about 30 minutes before your guests arrive for your outdoor party. It is safe to use around children and pets. You can fill a spray bottle with this mixture and apply it the legs of the picnic tables, spray it around swing sets, lawn chairs, along fences… Keep a few bottles handy to re-apply during the evening. I like the combination of Tea Tree Oil and Lemon Eucalyptus Oil as a mosquito repellent.
Spray this around pet areas as well. It will help repel fleas and ticks. Don’t spray it on the dog, just around his dog house/pen.
