Herb of the Year – 2013
The International Herb Association has announced Elder [ Sambucus nigra ] as Herb of the Year – 2013.
The shrub is easily cultivated and can be grown successfully in a location that receives full sun. Elder is native to northern Africa, Asia and Europe. Elder grows best in zones 5-7. The flowers and berries are used to make wine, jelly and medicinal tinctures. Elderberry is often grown in orchards and open fields to attract a variety of birds, butterflies and bees.
